Barbershop Harmony is a traditional American style of a capella sung in four-part harmony. Today, over 70, 000 singers worldwide, including a strong representation in Germany, take part in institutionalized competition. This volume analyzes a form of the art that was termed qRevivalq in the US during the 1940's and attempted to stay true to its origins of turn-of-the-19th-century syncopation. This study presents the development of the Barber Shop Chord of the 1890's to the Barber Shop Quartet Singing of the 1940's using a number of sources not previously available, and tells a new story of the development of a style.
