This dissertation presents a comprehensive and critical study of the thought of John Rawls regarding religious argumentation in the public debate off a democratic, pluralist society. The author uses the method of philosophical analysis that is reflection on the meanings of concepts and on the necessary conditions for the possibility of certain types of things. The scope of this analysis has been narrowed to the problems of civic ethics and moral legitimacy in the advocacy of coercive law in a pluralistic society.This is the principle of secular citizenship which is compatible with Audia#39;s view but at odds with Rawls a#39;s freestanding ideal.
